THE 103RD VERMONT CORRECTIONAL ACADEMY GRADUATION,
SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2009
Waterbury, VT – The Vermont Correctional Academy will hold its 103rd graduation ceremony at the Pavilion Auditorium in Montpelier on Friday, September 11th. Agency of Human Services Secretary Robert Hofmann will serve as the Keynote Speaker.
Robert D. Hofmann graduated from Wantagh (NY) High School and SUNY College at Cortland (BA History: Summa Cum Laude 1982). After working as a Business Analyst at Dun and Bradstreet in New York City, he attended Columbia Graduate School of Business (MBA Marketing & Finance 1985). Rob worked at American Express in New York City (1985-1990) in progressively challenging positions in financial services. From 1990-2003 he worked for Chittenden Bank in Burlington, VT, first as Director of Marketing and later as Senior Vice President for Business Services. Rob served from 2003-2005 as Vermont’s Commissioner of Finance and from 2005-2008 as Commissioner of Corrections. Since November 2008 he has served as AHS Secretary.
This event will also host a tribute to all service members who risked the ultimate sacrifice on this historic date, September 11, 2001. Air National Guard Sergeant and Department of Corrections employee, Dana Lesperance who was deployed on September 11, 2001, will provide a tribute to our brothers and sisters that have, and continue to serve our nation in the name of freedom.
Service members past and present are encouraged and invited to attend this ceremony in their military uniform.
The Correctional Academy, newly located at the Dale Building, 103 South Main Street in Waterbury, has existed as the Department of Corrections’ pre-service training program since 1993 and trained over 1,000 recruit and veteran officers. The increasing range of contemporary training topics includes security management, legal issues, ethics, mental health, supervision, conflict/crisis management, and emergency prevention and response.
The general public is invited to attend.

- I have served as a Vermont Correctional Academy coordinator for training development since 2001. I am responsible for training-the-trainer core competency training, Facility Training Officer programs and also serve as liaison to our security and supervision unit for training dealing with hostage negotiation, emergency preparedness, and the Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT). I graduate from the Vermont Correctional Academy in 1993, and previously served as a Correctional Officer I, Correctional Officer II, and the local training coordinator at the former Woodstock Regional Correctional Facility. I also part of the Emergency Preparedness team. I am involved in a range of educational development and training functions for the Department of Corrections and provides Academy instruction on emergency preparedness, self-harm, suicide prevention and use of force.
